Bending Rolls

Are you looking to buy or sell used Bending Rolls?

A bending roll, often called a plate rolling machine or roll bender, is a piece of industrial equipment in a fabrication shop used to bend flat sheets or plates of metal into large curved shapes. Its main function is to create cylinders, cones, and arcs for products like pipes, pressure vessels, storage tanks, ductwork, and heavy machinery buckets.

How a Bending Roll Works

The machine operates on the principle of three-point bending and plastic deformation, which permanently changes the shape of the metal without fracturing it.

Roll Configuration: The core of the machine consists of three or four heavy-duty steel rollers arranged in a triangular or trapezoidal configuration.

Pinching and Pressure: The flat metal plate is fed between the rollers. The pinch rolls (usually the top and one bottom roll) secure the plate and drive it forward. An adjustable roll (often a third or fourth roll) is gradually pushed down, applying continuous pressure to the metal as it moves.

Forming the Curve: The distance and pressure applied by the adjustable roll determine the radius of the bend. By passing the metal through the rolls repeatedly, the machine forces the outer surface to stretch and the inner surface to compress, progressively forming the flat plate into the desired curved shape.

Common Types

Bending rolls are classified by the number of rollers, which affects their efficiency and the complexity of the shapes they can produce:

3-Roll (Initial Pinch)

  • The most common type.
  • The plate is pinched between two rollers, while the third roller adjusts to create the bend.
  • Requires the metal to be repositioned to pre-bend both ends.
  • Versatility and lower cost for general fabrication.

4-Roll (Double Pinch)

  • Uses four rollers: a top roll, a bottom pinch roll, and two side-bending rolls.
  • The plate is pinched between the top and bottom rolls.
  • Efficiency and Precision: Can pre-bend both ends of the plate and roll the body in a single pass, often utilizing CNC controls.

2-Roll

  • Often used for thinner materials and high-volume production of small, simple cylindrical shapes.
  • Speed and consistency for repetitive tasks.
